Bible Reading and Scripture MemoryBible Reading

This year NOBTS President Chuck Kelley has selected Spiritual Vitality for the seminary's Core Value Emphasis.  As a part of the emphasis the seminary family will be giving a very high priority to reading through the Bible from September 1, 2009 through August 31, 2010. Daily Bible reading and weekly Scripture memorization plans have been developed to help guide participants through this journey.

Seminary students, professors, staff members, alumni and donors are encouraged to participate in this Bible reading and Scripture memory focus.

A Word about Bible Reading from Dr. Chuck Kelley

Dr. KelleyThe Bible is that Book whose authority, guidance, and power is necessary for any act of ministry to be effectual.  It always has and always will form the heart of the curriculum of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.  This School of Providence and Prayer exists in large part to teach its students to know thoroughly, interpret accurately, and proclaim clearly God's divinely inspired Word.  The formal study of Scripture must be complemented by a personal life that is saturated with the Bible if a minister is to be and do all that God desires.  From time to time our Seminary has read the Bible through as a special project.  We have rented a room during the Southern Baptist Convention and read the entire Bible aloud around the clock while the Convention conducted its business.  We have designated particular times to read through the Bible aloud on campus to prepare for revival, to seek God's guidance for crucial decisions and other such moments.  This passionate commitment to the Bible and its place in the life of Southern Baptists and our personal lives must be engraved on our souls.

As an expression of our core value of spiritual vitality, this year we will take a fresh approach to the necessary work of keeping the Bible a deeply rooted presence in our lives and community.  For the first time we are going to take a whole year and read the Bible through in conjunction with our entire curriculum.  From September 1, 2009 through August 31, 2010, we are asking every member of the Seminary family to read daily a designated portion of God's Word, so that we will all read every page of our Bibles over the course of the year.  This Scripture reading plan will be an assignment in every course for every degree program at every location of NOBTS.  It is the deepest prayer of our hearts that God will use our walk together through His Word to make us as individuals and as a Seminary family more of what He wants us to be.
