To abide by Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s directive at 4:00 PM Friday, March 20, 2020, to the city of New Orleans, NOBTS and Leavell College are moving to an essential function task force of employees until further notice. Employees in the following categories will be contacted by their supervisors for instructions about how to proceed.
All part-time employees not included in one of those categories will not work during this time unless otherwise instructed by their supervisor.
All full-time employees that are able to work from home are allowed to do so, but unless they are included in one of the above categories and/or directed by their supervisor, they are not to report to their campus office or the campus in general.
We urge all faculty, staff, and students to abide by our Mayor’s guidelines and directives. We will keep you informed of any changes as they come.
In an ongoing attempt to increase social distancing and decrease exposure during the COVID-19 national health emergency, effective Friday, March 20, 2020, all NOBTS campuses will move to a reduced office hour schedule:
As before, if employees are not comfortable with remaining in offices and continuing to come into work, please discuss those arrangements with your supervisor.
In addition to the above change to campus hours, we are also shifting our library practices at this time. While the library will remain open to our students and employees, we will now operate under a “take-out order” format. Please visit the library website for details about these procedures.
Our first priority in this situation is the health and well being of our students, faculty, and staff. We are also doing everything in our power to maintain our employees’ work hours in order to protect their financial well-being.
In keeping with our practice over the past week, we will continue to evaluate these measures every day and will communicate all decisions as soon as they are made. We anticipate this being our schedule for at least two weeks in keeping with the president’s “15 Days to Slow the Spread” initiative announced this week. If further measures are needed in the coming days we will adjust accordingly and keep you informed.
Announcement for Residents of Carey, Hamilton, and Lipsey Dorms
The NOBTS and Leavell College administration have developed a plan to ensure the safety of students remaining on campus and living in dormitory spaces: Carey, Hamilton, Lipsey Halls. As promised we are continuing to assess the situation and being proactive in our decision making. As of March 13, 2020, there are still no presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 on the NOBTS campus.
We are moving our students to other campus housing for the remainder of the semester. The goal is to reduce the risk factor presented by shared communal space. The advantage of this move will be that it ensures the safety of all of our students by eliminating the common communal areas where contamination and risk will be highest. Moreover, this move will ensure that, in the event we have a confirmed presumptive case on campus, all of our students will be in living spaces where they can safely isolate from those who are infected.
The following plan is being implemented beginning on March 16, 2020. Everyone needs to be moved by March 23, 2020.
Residents should await a message from the Housing Office for their updated housing assignment on Monday, March 16, 2020. The Dean of Students office will remain a resource for any questions or concerns regarding this move.
Our facilities team and housing office are working diligently to ensure a safe and clean environment on campus.

Both the governor of our state and the mayor of our city have declared a public health emergency, urging all citizens and residents to avoid large group gatherings to minimize the spread of COVID-19. In response to these statements, NOBTS and Leavell College are suspending all face to face classes and other large group gatherings until further notice, and will rely on online alternatives for course delivery. Face to face instruction and suspension of larger group gatherings will begin at the 5:00 pm, March 12, 2020. We will reassess the duration of this suspension by the end of Spring Break, next week, to determine if it needs to be extended further. This decision is effective for the NOLA campus as well as all extension centers. While there are no known presumptive cases on our campus at this time, there are at least 13 presumptive positive cases in Louisiana, with 10 of these being in New Orleans. As such, this decision is in the best interest of the NOBTS family and her surrounding communities.
All face to face courses and large group gatherings are suspended beginning 5:00 pm, March 12, 2020. Our campus, student housing, and student services will remain open. We will continue monitoring the situation around the clock and will keep our students, faculty, and personnel informed as we move forward. The New Orleans campus facilities staff is taking additional precautions in their cleaning process.
Travel for the institution is being limited and non-essential business travel is strongly discouraged. Institutional leadership may request a fourteen day isolation period from the NOBTS and Leavell College community upon return. Travel to and from Level 2 or higher countries, as identified by the CDC, is prohibited. Anyone traveling to or from these countries within the last fourteen days should notify the Dean of Students office and should anticipate a fourteen day isolation from the NOBTS and Leavell College campuses. Isolation is not a suspension from classes, students will be able to continue their work through alternative delivery methods.
If anyone in the NOBTS and Leavell College family has concerns about being exposed to the virus, they should contact their health provider as quickly as possible. *
We advise all of our students, faculty, and personnel to be as diligent as possible in keeping the sanitation standards as outlined by the CDC, and to avoid all unnecessary travel to places where the COVID-19 virus is known to be concentrated. For those wanting real time information about the spread of the virus in our community, please text COVIDNOLA to 888777. For further updates regarding NOBTS and response to COVID-19 please visit www.nobts.edu or www.leavellcollege.com.
* If you have had direct exposure to someone with COVID-19, are having symptoms, or have reason to think that you have been exposed to COVID-19, we ask that you self isolate for 14 days.
