The motto of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Leavell College is "Prepare Here, Serve Anywhere," and it's a challenge that we take seriously. We truly strive to be a launching pad for kingdom work in the parishes of New Orleans to all peoples worldwide.
But we also recognize that for many students, preparing "here" means staying close to home and serving where God has already planted them. For them, our distance learning options provide exceptional theological education that our residential students enjoy.
Dr. Cory Barnes, associate vice president of distance learning for NOBTS and Leavell College, is a key contributor to the success of these programs. Dr. Barnes is a three-time graduate of NOBTS, so he understands the importance of advocating for students—wherever they live. That's also why he approaches his responsibilities with the heart of a pastor.
"A lot of what I do is academic and class-centered," said Dr. Barnes, who also teaches Old Testament and Hebrew. "But I was taught that there is no difference between classroom and boots on the ground, so I approach both my roles with a pastoral emphasis. I look at everything I do as having a kingdom purpose."
Dr. Barnes serves all students and faculty involved in non-traditional remote learning - extension centers and online learners. In every context, he strives to provide the same level of compassion and service that he received as a student.
"I was talking to a friend recently about how NOBTS helped shape me," he recalled. "One way was through great scholars who are also great churchmen. We nurture an environment where great scholars remain involved in local churches. Those are the kind of people who were formative for me."
Dr. Cory Barnes is not alone in his commitment to carry on this tradition. For more than a century, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Leavell College has sought to equip and empower Christian leaders who will reflect Christ's image to the world and challenge new generations to do the same.
Fortunately, we do not labor alone. We have the partnership of friends and alums like you, individuals who are willing propel our students with gifts to the Providence Fund. What a privilege it would be to have you partner with us as we seek to honor God by preparing servants who will walk with Christ, proclaim His truth, and fulfill His mission. Therefore, like Dr. Barnes, we invite you to become a partner with us in our mission.
Dr. Barnes understands the vital ministry of donors. That's why his family chooses to support NOBTS and Leavell College themselves. He also recognizes God's hand in so much of what is taking place on our campus, in our extension centers, and through our online offerings.
"God is clearly at work at NOBTS and Leavell College," he said. "Costs can be prohibitive, and I'm thankful for donors who help students pursue their call by helping us keep courses affordable. But the central truth remains…I see God at work here. I see God's favor, and donors can know that their resources are going toward His work."
As you consider supporting NOBTS and Leavell College, please know that today is the best day to start. And the Providence Fund is the best way to start. In addition, the need has never been greater. Inflation has reduced many of our traditional revenue streams, which makes the support from individuals like you even more important. So, please do not delay in establishing your support today.
